In Auchi, Edo State, Nigeria, there is a Federal Polytechnic called Auchi Poly. It was one of Nigeria’s original four polytechnic institutions. Almost 10,000 students are enrolled in its business, technological, environmental, and arts courses since it was founded in 1963.
Auchi Polytechnic’s History
As a technical institute, Auchi Polytechnic was established in 1963 as a gift from the British government to the then-Midwestern Region. It exclusively provided business and engineering courses up to the Ordinary Diploma level. The need for skilled labor increased and covered a larger range of specialities by the 1970s. In order to teach skilled workers up to the Higher National Diploma level in engineering, science, environmental studies, business studies, and art and design, the Bendel State Government transformed the technical college into a full-fledged polytechnic in 1973.
The institution’s present legislation requires it to develop middle-level workers who are highly skilled and well-trained in the domains of engineering, applied sciences and technology, environmental studies, management studies, and art and industrial design for the benefit of the national economy. In 1994, the Federal Government acquired control of the polytechnic from the Edo State Government.

ND Entrance Requirements at Auchi Polytechnics
All applicants must have taken the UTME; the cutoff for all ND (full-time) applicants at Auchi Poly is 120.
Applicants must have obtained at least 5 credits in one sitting or 6 credits in two sittings in WASCE, SSCE, NECO, GCE O’L, or NABTEB, including English Language and Mathematics.
The polytechnic must have been a candidate’s first or second choice.
Requirements for the HND Students at Auchi Polytechnic
The following are the prerequisites for applicants seeking HND admission to the Polytechnic:
Applicants for any Higher National Diploma (HND) program must hold a Polytechnic National Diploma (ND) or a qualification equivalent from another institution with a program that has received NBTE accreditation. Applicants must hold a National Diploma Certificate in the subject area of the Higher National Diploma Level they choose to pursue.
Candidates must meet particular departmental requirements as well as five (5) or six (6) Ordinary Level credit passes in one sitting or two (2) sittings, with English and Mathematics being required in the WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB test.
