During a career talk given by the branch to the students of First Foundation College, Akatakpo Street, Ajegunle, Lagos State, Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Apapa branch, Lagos State, David Omavuezi said, “IF you have education, you are one step closer to where you are going, from where you are coming; you have a direction of life.” He told the students about the best engineering courses in Nigeria 2023
He told the students that their purpose in attending school was to strengthen their willpower so they could achieve their goals in life, but he urged them to major in engineering instead, listing the many advantages it had for both the person who pursues it and for society as a whole.
Engineer and vice chairman of the society Garba M. Ombugadu stated that the goal of the career lecture was to develop young students’ talents and help them understand the value of entering the engineering field, which he revealed is one of the current NSE president’s main priorities.
He claimed that some children who are truly gifted and have the potential to become engineers shy away from science because of their misconception that it is a difficult subject to study.
Ibisi O. Malvin, an engineer who spoke at the event, advised the kids that in order to be admitted to a university to study engineering, they needed to have a passion for the topics.
He advised them to begin by adoring the subject-matter instructors rather than shunning them.
He declared: “Further Mathematics is crucial for engineering. It is the primary subject that a person must understand if they wish to become engineers. Additional disciplines include English, which is required for all university admissions, Mathematics, Physics, Technical Drawing, Chemistry, and Biology.
The students were given more information on the procedure for becoming registered engineers by the vice chairman, Garba.
He asserted that “engineering has no boundaries and there are numerous engineering branches. Before being called an engineer, a person must first be registered as an engineer, which can be done by working for at least four years after graduating and gaining what is referred to as “cognate experience” before submitting an application to the Nigeria Society of Engineers for admission (NSE). In addition, depending on the degree that a particular university awards, you must possess a bachelor’s degree in science or engineering. If you hold a higher national diploma (HND), you must obtain a postgraduate degree (PGD) in the subject matter that you studied in school before you can be admitted.
John Ibanga, the school’s principal, expressed satisfaction with the talk he gave to his students. He acknowledged that fewer kids are taking science classes at the school and expressed hope that the career talk would help to reverse this trend.

- Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and English
The following are the minimum requirements;
- Passing grades in at least two of the following courses at HSC or GCE A/L: pure mathematics
- Applied Mathematics, both theoretical and practical Physics \Chemistry
- The candidates must also have earned credits in mathematics, physics, and chemistry on the Senior Secondary School Examination, or an equivalent, in order to be considered.
- Clear the HND exams for the corresponding Engineering courses with an Upper Credit grade.
- Bearers with first degrees in related professions.
- A waiver or special circumstance
- First-degree holders in related professions and HND holders with at least an upper credit level pass in an engineering course may be admitted to the third (3rd)year program.
Engineering Course Length
Engineering programmes require a five-year study period at the university and a four-year study period at the polytechnic.
In Nigerian universities and polytechnics, the study time for engineering courses is broken down as follows:
- Five (5) years after taking the UTME.
- Undergraduate Straight Entry: Four (4) years
- Three (3) years for direct entry (waiver)
- Two (2) years equals a national diploma (ND).
- Two (2) years for the Higher National Diploma (HND)
