Apple has just officially launched the new iPhone 15 series and the changes are very impressive.
The big lesson is simple and can be summarized in one sentence:
iPhone 15 is one of the biggest upgrades of the iPhone family. Well, there’s a lot to like so let’s start with…
Overview of Apple iPhone 15
Apple has revealed four new iPhone 15 models, continuing the playbook of iPhone 14 and previous years.
First came the vanilla iPhone 15, then the iPhone 15 Plus, then the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. All start at the same price and have the same storage options, except the iPhone 15 Pro Max now starts at a higher price of $1,200 but has 256GB of storage in the base version. The rest of the lineup starts with 128GB of storage as a base.
Among these four, we have two compact iPhones with 6.1-inch screens (iPhone 15 and 15 Pro) and two larger ones (Plus and Pro Max) with 6.7-inch screens.
The most affordable of the new versions is the iPhone 15, which starts at $800 and has a 6.1-inch screen and dual rear cameras. Then, for a starting price of $900, you get the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus, which has a larger battery but only two cameras. And then you have the more expensive Pro models, which now have new features to further differentiate themselves from the non-Pro models. Both iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are equipped with the next generation A17 Bionic chip with many improvements. The smaller 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro retains the familiar triple rear camera setup, while the larger iPhone 15 Pro Max is the first iPhone to feature a folding camera with a native 5X zoom, much longer than the current 3X.
The 15 Pro starts at $999 with 128GB of storage, and the Pro Max starts at $1,199 with 256GB of storage. Both will be available for pre-order this Friday and will go on sale September 22.
This year’s Pro has a 6.1-inch screen and the Pro Max has a 6.7-inch screen, like the new iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. Both are powered by the A17 Pro chip, which Apple says delivers the fastest performance of any smartphone and can even challenge some high-end PCs. With a redesigned GPU, Apple seems to think these devices could be poised to improve the types of games you can play on your phone. (Of course, Apple loves to talk about high-end gaming, and the results… does not always follow.)
Of course, both phones have a USB-C port on the bottom instead of the old Lightning port. But in the case of the Pro, it can be about more than just charging the battery:
Apple says the 15 Pro is the first phone with 10Gbps transfer speeds, which will make downloading photos and videos (or any type of large file) from your phone much easier.
All that power is housed in a new, sturdier body, which Apple says is one of the toughest you’ll find on a phone in the industry. From what we’ve seen in the video so far, it doesn’t look much different but it’s a big change nonetheless. The new devices are available in white, black, blue and “natural” colors. And of course, Apple is extremely proud of the complex engineering behind this process.
The Action Button, which replaces the ringer switch on the left edge of iPhone Pro, is a new button that you can customize to run shortcuts, show accessibility features, open the camera, turn on the flashlight, and more. By default, this is always the ringer switch, but you’ll want to use it to do more.
Here’s a summary of the 10 biggest new features on iPhone 15:
- USB-C port replaces Lightning
- All four models use Dynamic Island
- iPhone 15 and 15 Plus use the older A16 chip
- iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max run the new A17 chip
- The Pro model uses titanium instead of stainless steel, reducing weight
- iPhone 15 Pro models replace the mute switch with a new programmable action button
- Improved battery life on some models
- Only the iPhone 15 Pro Max model has a new periscope camera with a longer zoom range
- Standard iPhone 15 models benefit from an improved main camera with a 48 MP sensor
So those are just the most notable new features… but there are also plenty of other smaller improvements you should know about. We go deeper below, exploring all these new features and more, so read on to learn everything about the iPhone 15 series!
