The Nigeria Police Academy was established in the early 1980s after the Nigerian government asked the British government to send some United Kingdom police officers to Nigeria in order to assess the Nigerian police’s training requirements in 1981.

Three Nigerian police officers were sent to Egypt in 1986 by the then-inspector general of police, Alhaji Mohammed A. Gambo Rtd, under the leadership of late S.Z. Daura (assistant inspector general), to attend the Egyptian Police Academy. The findings and suggestions of these two expert teams had a significant impact on the construction of the Nigeria Police Academy in Kano, which serves as a high-level manpower development institution with the goal of educating police officers to the greatest levels of professionalism.

The Police Training School Challawa, Kano, where cadet Inspectors were trained, and the Police College Kaduna, where cadet ASPs were educated, served as the Academy’s two temporary campuses as it launched concurrently in 1988.

Following its former commissioning on April 2, 1996 by General Sani Abacha, GCON, DSS, then-head of state and commander in chief of the armed forces, the two campuses were combined and moved to its permanent site in Wudil, Kano, with the expectation that the Academy would be affiliated with a university for degree-granting courses.

OBJECTIVE

The Police academy was established with the following goals and objectives:

To establish a facility that can produce high-quality labor, particularly at the ASP and Inspectorate cadres, in order to satisfy the Nigeria Police Force’s middle-level labor needs.
To give students the skills they need to be competent law enforcement officers and provide selfless service to the country, supported by a solid academic foundation, high professional standards, and moral character.

ENTRY CRITERIA

The following are the minimum requirements for enrollment in the Academy for the two cadrets:

A school leaving certificate (WAEC or NECO) with at least five credits, including English language and mathematics for the cadet Inspectors, and a university degree (second class lower) or HND (Upper Credit) from a recognized university or polytechnic for cadet ASPs.
For cadet ASPs and cadet Inspectors, the applicant cannot be older than 24 years or 28, respectively.
A physically fit applicant is required.
Females must be at least 1.56 meters (5 feet 4 inches) tall.
40 cm (36 inches) is the expanded chest measurement for men.
The applicant cannot have a criminal record.
Must be a Nigerian
He or she must be in good health.

DURATION

The cadet ASP and cadet Inspector programs are divided into three stages and last for a total of 72 weeks, or 18 months. The basic stage is the longest and lasts for six months. Advanced stage for six months, followed by intermediate stage for six months.

The following courses are completed by the cadets throughout the course of the 18 months.

Following training, the cadets graduate as ASPs and Inspectors, respectively, and are assigned to state commands

Where they complete a one-year attachment to gain experience in the field before being given the go-ahead to stand on their own.

The Academy accepts applicants on a quota system, which means that each member state of the federation receives an equal number of spots, such as 12 applicants from each state. Starting at the state level, selection moves up to the zonal level, and then to Force Headquarters Abuja. Application forms are available from the Police service commission or Force Headquarters websites after advertisements in National News, the Media, and websites.

The Police service commission is solely responsible for appointments into the Nigerian Police force.

Results of the Nigerian Police Academy

Since its establishment in 1988, the Police Academy has graduated 2,848 cadet ASPs and 2,374 cadet inspectors. So, 5,222 Cadet officers have graduated from this School in total. Ten of these officers were from Sierra Leone and the Republic of the Gambia.

The current group of cadets, which started their training on January 9th, 2012, consists of 224 cadet Inspectors and 266 cadet ASPs. The Nigeria Police Academy Wudil in Kano State has been transformed by the Federal Government of Nigeria to a degree-awarding school, and as a result, the National Universities Commission has designated the Academy as the 37th Federal University and the 124th University in Nigeria.
